Bodemgruis
In the new Tactiel series by publisher Uitgeverij Petrichor, artist | blacksmith Sophia de Vries created the first edition:
She tells the story of her forge, full of steel, fire, rust, and clutter, where she creates her beautiful artworks.
The Bodemgruis books are made from old steel plates once used by DAF to build their cars, as well as leftover materials from her artworks on the workshop floor.
Edition: 10 copies (now sold out), 1 copy has been included in the collection of the Atheneumbibliotheek in Deventer.
MIMIK theatertje
For MIMIK film, theater, and café, I made 300 small steel theaters. They were given as a gift to the artists after their performance as a thank you for the show. It’s a mini theater made of steel, behind which a tealight can be placed. The height of the object is 9 centimeters.
Tentje
The Tentje project originated during a suitcase pop-up exhibition (Plan B) in the city center of Deventer. It is based on the enormous refugee crisis that flooded Europe at the time. A small tent inside a suitcase, symbolizing the uncertain and dangerous journey that refugees undertake and how they ultimately end up or become stranded in rather basic accommodations. A portion of the proceeds was donated to Stichting Vluchteling Nederland (Refugee Foundation Netherlands).
Uitgevlogen
“We want to have control over nature, so we lock it up,” says Sophia de Vries. Here, the birds have flown, freed. By whom? Where are the birds now? And where must they go to build a new nest?
De Schaal en de Huid
Upscale Galerie is a project by Ellis Veth, a Rotterdam-based artist. She invites artists to create works for her gallery on a scale of 1:10. In the gallery, I conducted research into the monumentality of my work. Working on a smaller scale offers the possibility to create “large” works without the immense costs and organization involved. You could see it as an experiment—what is the impact of my sculptures when they move beyond my reach and lose their human scale?
Feest van de Geest 'Levensadem'
Feest van de Geestis a meeting between Visual Art, Pentecost, and the Architecture of Church Buildings. During the period between Ascension and Pentecost, churches are open to the public. Artists present and exhibit newly created art, inspired by the Pentecost celebration and the architecture of church buildings. For the Dorpskerk in Haren, I created 30 cloches with a floating leaf. They were displayed in the church during the event in 2018.
Pakje Kunst
Various editions of Pakje Kunst. Each time, a new series of 15 small objects that fit into a (cigarette) box. The vending machine is located at Boekhandel Praamstra in Deventer. Pakje Kunst is an initiative by Ro-Nalt Schrauwen from Tilburg and has vending machines throughout the country.
Swap your Ring
During the exhibition Ted Noten & Co. – On Value at Museum Jan in Amstelveen, visitors could exchange their ring for a ring (Miss Piggy ring) from Ted Noten’s artwork. For this occasion, I specially created a ring and swapped it. This “house ring” is now part of Ted Noten’s artwork Wanna swap your ring?
